The department of Mechanical Engineering started in 1984 is one of the oldest departments of this college, . This department contributes to the development of technical manpower needed by our country in the various areas of Mechanical Engineering. Presently, it offers the following courses.

1. B.E. Mechanical Engineering
2. M.E. Computer Aided Design (CAD)
3. M.E. Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM)

All these courses are affiliated to the Anna University. Apart from meeting the curricular requirements of the affiliated university, the department organises programmes to provide the students with industrial and practical experience through training and project work in

industries so that they are able to meet the industrial requirements and face real life situations boldly. Both the undergraduate as well as the postgraduate degree programs follow the semester pattern with periodical internal evaluation that culminates with the university examination at the end of each semester. Modern multimedia teaching technologies are used to supplement lectures and enhance the quality of teaching. Computer aided learning packages on different subjects are available for self-learning. Industrial visits are arranged for students to gain practical exposure. In addition, guest lectures and panel discussions are arranged by inviting eminent persons from organisations of repute in the industry.

A high degree of professionalism, students’ chapter is inducted through the functioning of students chapters of professional associations such as American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) and Society of Mechanical Engineers. These bodies organize seminars for students on topics of current importance and global relevance to industry.

After due evaluation of this department, the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) has awarded ‘A’ grade, which is valid till 31.3.2004. This department is recognised as a research department by the Anna University for undertaking on campus research studies at Doctorate level.

As a measure of continuing education, the department of Mechanical Engineering periodically conducts training programmes for participants from industries in productivity improvement and software. In addition, it undertakes industrial consultancy projects for industries in and around Chennai.
