PROFILE OF ENGLISH DEPARTMENT

The Department of English was established in the year 1984. It consists of four faculty members – two Assistant Professors, a Senior Lecturer and a Lecturer. The Department focuses primarily on the teaching of English to the students of I year B.E./B.Tech.

Besides teaching English to the I year B.E/B.Tech., it conducts a course “Communication Skills,” which is oriented to the students of II, III, and IV year BE/B.Tech. The syllabus is designed so as to meet the practical needs of the students. On the whole, it equips them for their future career.



The Department also conducts a course, “Business English Certificate” which is offered by the British Council. The course is intended for the students of II year and III year B.E/B.Tech. and also for the students of Management Studies. It helps them improve their communication skills relating to business situations. It also prepares them to cope with a range of professional and real-life situations.

The Department of English pays special attention to the weak learners and conducts coaching classes to enable them to pass the examination


Achievements of the Department:

•  The Department has been consistently producing good results. It has the credit of producing 100% results in the University examinations held in April, 2004.

•  A language laboratory with a 30-seater capacity has been set up to improve the speaking and listening skills of the students.

•  Two of the members of the Department, Mrs. Jewelcy Jawahar and Mrs. P. Rathna have published text books and work books for the use of the students of I B.E. / B. Tech.

•  Mrs. A.Shahin Sultana, HOD of English, and Mrs. P.M.Usha Rani, Assistant Professor of English obtained Ph.D. degree from Anna University in December, 2004.

•  The faculty members of the Department have attended conferences, workshops, etc., and have presented papers. Recently, all the four faculty members of the Department attended the 35 th Annual Conference organized by the English Language Teachers' Association of India. It was the first International Conference held by ELTAI.
