DEPARTMENT OF ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONICS ENGINEERING

PROFILE OF ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONICS ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT

Dr. R. RAJA PRABU
Professor & Head

This Department offers the following courses.

  1. B.E. Electrical and Electronics Engineering
  2. M.E. Power Systems.

The UG program is on a semester pattern. The first semester is common to all branches of engineering. Both these courses are affiliated to the Anna University. The department is accredited both by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) and by the Institution of Engineers (India) and is certified to ISO 9001:2000 from DNV, Netherlands. The highly-qualified faculty of this department include three faculty members with Ph.D. qualification and seven members pursuing Ph.D. by undertaking research in the following areas.

  • Power Systems
  • High Voltage
  • Electrical Machines
  • Controls Engineering

The Faculty members are encouraged to update their knowledge by attending Continuing Education Programs (CEP), and also to pursue higher studies.

The Faculty members publish their research findings in International Journals (like IEEE) and have secured Travel Fellowships from various agencies like COSTED, DST and AICTE etc. to present their papers at International Conferences. Faculty members are also involved in preparing laboratory manuals and publishing Textbooks for the benefit of the students.

The department’s excellent infrastructure in the form of laboratories includes:

  • AC and DC Machines Laboratory
  • Electronics Laboratory
  • Circuits and Measurement Laboratory
  • Control and Instrumentation Laboratory
  • Power Electronics Laboratory
  • Special Machines Laboratory
  • Relay Laboratory
  • Power system Simulation Laboratory
  • Computer Laboratory

The Special Machines and Relay Labs worth Rs. 12.0 Lakhs were setup as a part of the value added laboratories

The department has the following software packages

  1. MATLAB 6.5 - five users (With 5 tool boxes, namely, Simulink, Power System, Control System, Neural Network, Fuzzy Logic and Optimization)
  2. ETAP 4.7.0
  3. PSCAD 3.04

Students are exposed to practical aspects of the subjects through industrial visits, inplant training and industry oriented project works. The students are also encouraged to participate and present papers in the national level technical seminars. In order to promote organizational skills & leadership qualities among students, they are enrolled as members in professional societies like IEEE, ISTE, IE(I) & ISTD. The students are exposed to latest technological advancements through weekly seminars / special invited lectures by leading professionals from institutions and industries.
