ANNA UNIVERSITY REGULATION REQUIREMENTS FOR COMPLETION OF A SEMESTER

A candidate who has fulfilled the following conditions shall be deemed to have satisfied the requirements for completion of a semester:

He/She secures not less than 75% of overall attendance for a particular semester taking into account the total number of hours in all subjects put together attended by the student as against the total number of hours in all courses offered during the semester.

A candidate who has secured between 65% and 74% attendance in the current semester (short fall due to medical reasons only) will not be permitted to appear for the regular examinations of the current semester, but will be allowed to proceed to the next semester. They will be permitted to appear for the missed semester theory/practical examinations as arrears during the next semester University examinations.

However, candidates who are representing the University in State/National/ International/ Inter University Sports events with prior permission from the Head of the Institution are given exemption up to 10% of the required attendance. These candidates will be allowed to appear for the current semester examination.

He/She earns a progress certificate from the Head of the Institution for having satisfactorily completed all the courses pertaining to that semester, as prescribed by the University from time to time.

His/Her conduct should be satisfactory as certified by the Head of the Institution.

Candidates who do not complete the semester will not be permitted to write the end-semester examinations and will not be able to proceed to the next semester. They are required to repeat the incomplete semester in the next academic year.

PROCEDURES FOR AWARDING MARKS FOR INTERNAL ASSESSMENT

Every teacher is required to maintain an ATTENDANCE AND ASSESSMENT RECORD where attendance is marked during each lecture or practical session or project work class. Also the test marks and records of class work (topic covered) are maintained separately for each course. This should be submitted to the Head of the department periodically (atleast 3 times every semester) for checking the syllabus coverage and the records of test marks and attendance. The Head of the Department signs this after due verification. At the end of the semester the record is verified by the Head of the Institution, who will have the document in safe custody for not less than five years. The University or any inspection team appointed by them may inspect the records of attendance and assessment of both current and previous semesters.

THEORY COURSES

Three tests each carrying 100 marks shall be conducted by the Department/Institution. The total marks scored in all three tests put together out of 300, shall be reduced for a maximum of 20 marks and rounded to the nearest integer (Equal weightage will be given for all three tests).

PRACTICAL COURSES

Every practical exercise/experiment shall be evaluated based on the conduct of an experiment / exercise and records maintained. There shall be atleast one mid-semester test. The criteria for arriving at the internal assessment marks (total of 20 marks) shall be decided based on the recommendation of the class committee or the Head of the Institution and announced at the beginning of every semester.

THEORY COURSES WITH LABORATORY COMPONENT

For a theory course with laboratory component, there shall be three tests: the first two tests (each 100 marks) will be conducted on the theory part and the third test (maximum 100 marks) on the laboratory component. The total marks scored in the first two tests shall be calculated and reduced for a maximum of 10 marks. Similarly, the marks scored in the third test will be calculated for a maximum of 10 marks. The sum of these scores for a total of 20 marks may then be arrived at and rounded to the nearest integer.

PASSING REQUIREMENTS

A candidate who secures not less than 50% of the total marks prescribed for the course in the end-semester University Examination in both theory and practical courses (including project work), is declared to have passed the examination.

If a candidate fails to secure the pass percentage in a particular course, it is mandatory that he/she shall register and reappear for the examination in that course during the next semester. Until the candidate secures a pass he/she can reappear for the examination. However, the internal assessment marks scored by the student in the first attempt shall be retained and considered valid for all subsequent attempts.

DISCIPLINE

Every student is required to observe disciplined and decorous behaviour both inside and outside the college and not to indulge in any activity , which will tend to bring down the prestige of the University/College.
